Message Waiting
Many phones and endpoints support message waiting. For example, some IP phones will flash a light and show a voicemail icon next to the line key, ATAs will produce a stutter dial tone and send an FSK message waiting signal, and softphone apps can send a notification of a new voicemail.
The message waiting light should turn off after you listen to or mark all or your messages as read. However, it may need to be cleared manually, such as on some analog phones.

FAQ
Can I use an answering machine if I have voicemail enabled?
As long as the answering machine ring count is below the ring count for your extension. When using an answering machine or any other device handling senstive data on the system, you are responsible for the security of the equipement. Answering machies can be insecure, as most only use 2 digit codes, meaning they are really easy to guess, and they don't give you any limits on tries. Administration is not responsible for break-ins of equipement due to lack of security on your part. Also the Mediation policy applies heavly here. On the other hand, the PBX voicemail system is secured, your not responsible for the security of it. Meaning if something goes wrong, we are responsible to fix it and to punish anyone involed. So while you can use an answering system, your responsible for its security
